He was a Roman Captain under Diocletian and converted many Roman soldiers to his faith. Because he refused to cease this religious activity, the emperor ordered Sebastian's execution. He was shot with arrows and left for dead but was found by a Christian woman, Irene, who nursed him back to health. Sebastian, however, immediately confronted Diocletian again and was recaptured and finally killed circa 288 AD. St. Sebastian is especially invoked against plague and his feast day is January 20. St. Sebastian has often been depicted in art and was especially popular during the Italian Renaissance. MARTYR adapts a picture of the saint by the northern Italian master Andrea Mantegna and was painted around 1480.
